Zero-Log Edge Telemetry & Real-Time Gateway Health Monitoring
1 min read
1. Overview & Architectural Philosophy #
The BEX Real-Time Gateway Health Monitoring and Telemetry Engine provides continuous, high-precision oversight of global edge servers to ensure maximum network availability, optimal load balancing, and rapid outage mitigation. To uphold BEX’s strict zero-log mandate, the telemetry pipeline is architected to collect strictly aggregate, system-level operational metrics. Hardware performance and carrier health are monitored continuously without inspecting, storing, or correlating individual user identities, assigned IP addresses, or traffic contents.
2. Anonymous Edge Telemetry Metrics #
Edge gateway nodes collect and transmit localized infrastructure metrics to the central control plane at 10-second intervals. Telemetry collection is strictly limited to non-identifying hardware and network data:
- Hardware Resource Utilization: Real-time metrics on aggregate CPU load, RAM allocation, network interface packet queues, and socket buffer capacity.
- Network Throughput & Capacity: Total ingress and egress bandwidth utilization across physical network interfaces to evaluate link saturation.
- Aggregate Session Density: Raw numerical counts of total active tunnels per gateway node, calculated without associating session tokens, account IDs, or origin IP addresses.
- Synthetic Latency & Loss Metrics: Upstream carrier transit latency, packet loss percentage, and jitter measured via automated inter-node ping probes.
3. Real-Time Health Probing & Anomaly Detection #
The BEX control plane utilizes a distributed health monitoring engine to detect infrastructural degradation, hardware faults, or upstream ISP outages in real time:
- Synthetic Active Probing: Control plane worker nodes execute lightweight health probes (ICMP/UDP) against edge gateway health endpoints every 5 seconds.
- Automated Degradation Detection: If a gateway node experiences packet loss exceeding 2%, CPU saturation above 90%, or an unhandled link drop, its health status is immediately flagged as “Degraded” or “Unhealthy”.
- Isolating Node Outages: Nodes flagged as degraded are temporarily removed from the active Anycast and Unicast client connection registries within seconds, preventing new client handshakes from attempting connections to failing nodes.
4. Dynamic Load Steering & Zero-Log Compliance #
- Health-Aware Client Steering: The BEX client application queries the control plane during initiation to receive an updated, real-time list of optimal and healthy gateway nodes based on current node health and proximity.
- Zero-Log Telemetry Pipeline: Telemetry metrics are held strictly in volatile RAM and processed via ephemeral messaging queues. No telemetry data is ever written to persistent disk storage, ensuring zero historical tracking of node usage.
- Stateless Health Checks: Health monitoring daemons operate statelessly, guaranteeing that operational maintenance leaves zero forensic traces of user connection history.
5. Key Strategic Benefits #
- Proactive Infrastructure Resilience: Automated detection and isolation of server or carrier faults before they impact end-user connections.
- Optimized Network Performance: Prevents node congestion by dynamically steering new connections away from high-load gateways.
- Uncompromised User Privacy: Delivers enterprise-grade infrastructure monitoring with absolute zero collection of user activity or identity logs.
