Cryptographic Key Exchange & DNS/IPv6 Leak Prevention
1 min read
1. Overview & Security Architecture #
The BEX Cryptographic Engine and Leak Prevention Framework provide end-to-end mathematical protection against eavesdropping, man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks, and side-channel identity exposure. Utilizing modern elliptic-curve cryptography and strict operating system adapter binding, BEX ensures that all transit traffic, domain name lookups (DNS), and IPv6 packets remain fully encapsulated within the encrypted TUN interface without leaking to the underlying ISP network.
2. Cryptographic Key Exchange & Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS) #
To establish secure communication channels while guaranteeing that past traffic cannot be decrypted even if a private key is compromised in the future, BEX enforces state-of-the-art cryptographic primitives:
- Noise Protocol Framework: BEX tunnels utilize the Noise Protocol Framework with Curve25519 for ephemeral Key Exchange, ChaCha20 for symmetric encryption, and Poly1305 for data authentication (or AES-256-GCM hardware-accelerated modes).
- Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS): Ephemeral session keys are generated independently for every handshake and rotated automatically every 2 to 3 minutes or upon transferring 1 Gigabyte of data.
- Zero Static Key Storage: Edge gateways do not store long-term private session keys. Once a key rotation completes, previous session keys are permanently zeroed out in memory.
3. Comprehensive DNS Leak Prevention Architecture #
DNS leaks occur when a operating system routes domain resolution requests through the default ISP DNS server outside the encrypted VPN tunnel. BEX mitigates this through a three-layer isolation pipeline:
- Internal Resolver Binding: Upon tunnel initialization, the BEX client forcibly rebinds the operating system’s global DNS configuration to point exclusively to BEX’s internal, zero-log DNS resolvers located within the encrypted tunnel interface (e.g., 10.64.0.1).
- Outbound Port 53 Filtering: System-level firewall rules drop all unencrypted outbound UDP and TCP requests targeting external Port 53 addresses outside the active TUN adapter.
- Encrypted DNS Transports: Upstream DNS queries between BEX edge nodes and core resolvers utilize DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT) to prevent upstream carrier sniffing.
4. IPv6 & WebRTC Leak Shielding #
- Native IPv6 Encapsulation & Blackholing: BEX supports dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 routing inside the tunnel. On IPv4-only gateway nodes, the client interface automatically blackholes all outbound IPv6 traffic at the virtual driver level, preventing operating systems from bypassing the tunnel via native ISP IPv6 addresses.
- WebRTC Side-Channel Protection: Integrated client firewall hooks block WebRTC STUN/TURN requests from inspecting local interface IP addresses, shielding the user’s real public IP address inside web browsers.
- Automated Kill-Switch: If the underlying physical Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection drops unexpectedly, the BEX client blocks all non-VPN network interfaces until the encrypted tunnel is fully restored.
5. Key Strategic Benefits #
- Mathematical Confidentiality: State-of-the-art elliptic-curve encryption provides maximum data protection with minimal CPU overhead.
- Zero Identity Exposure: Complete elimination of DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC side-channel leaks.
- Resilient Threat Protection: Perfect Forward Secrecy guarantees that historical session logs remain cryptographically unrecoverable indefinitely.
