Gigify Real-Time Metering Engine & Per-GB Bandwidth Accounting

1 min read

1. Overview & System Purpose #

The BEX Gigify Pure-Volume Architecture is a dedicated pay-per-GB bandwidth metering engine designed for users and applications that require pure volume allocation with zero time-based decay. Unlike calendar plans (Premium) or rolling 24-hour windows (Flex), Gigify subscriptions measure consumption purely based on transferred bytes across the active data plane. Unused data quotas remain preserved indefinitely until fully consumed.

2. Real-Time Telemetry & eBPF Kernel Metering #

To account for byte usage with high precision and low CPU overhead, BEX edge gateways utilize kernel-level telemetry probes:

  • eBPF/XDP Packet Probing: Traffic volume is measured at the kernel network interface level using Extended Berkeley Packet Filters (eBPF) and eXpress Data Path (XDP) hooks before packet processing reaches user space.
  • Bi-directional Stream Counting: Ingress (download) and egress (upload) bytes passing through the user’s TUN interface are measured continuously.
  • Privacy-First Zero-Inspection Metering: The metering engine counts raw packet headers and payload sizes exclusively. No packet payload inspection, deep packet inspection (DPI), or IP destination logging is performed during byte accounting.

3. Per-GB Accounting & Delta Batching Workflow #

To prevent database locks and latency spikes from constant real-time database writes, the control plane employs a delta-batching synchronization workflow:

  1. Session Authorization: Upon tunnel creation, the client’s current Gigify byte balance is retrieved from the control plane vault. If balance is greater than zero, connection is granted.
  2. Local Delta Aggregation: The edge gateway node accumulates transferred bytes locally in high-speed RAM.
  3. Delta Sync Protocol: Every 30 seconds or upon accumulating 10 Megabytes of transferred data (whichever comes first), the edge node issues a signed delta update to the central accounting database.
  4. Real-Time Vault Deduction: The control plane deducts the delta bytes from the user’s Gigify balance in real time.
  5. Quota Exhaustion Handling: When the remaining balance reaches zero bytes, the control plane sends a teardown signal to the edge gateway, gracefully closing the TUN session and notifying the client app with a GIGIFY_QUOTA_EXHAUSTED event.

4. Precision Accounting & Session Integrity #

  • Overhead Factor Adjustment: Network protocol encapsulation overhead (WireGuard/OpenVPN headers) is accounted for to ensure transparent parity between client-side reported usage and server-side logs.
  • Crash-Resistant Recovery: If an edge node suffers an abrupt power or network failure, local un-synced delta metrics are recovered from local persistent journal logs during node reboot.

5. Key Strategic Benefits #

  • Zero Time Decay: Bandwidth quotas never expire, making it optimal for backup connections, occasional high-volume transfers, or seasonal usage.
  • Byte-Level Precision: Accurate per-gigabyte metering with real-time balance updates in the user dashboard.
  • Scalable Infrastructure: Low-latency kernel metering supports high-throughput routing without degrading connection speeds.
